Dear Colleagues and Friends,
|
As the WG08 Executive Board, we express our profound appreciation for the active engagement demonstrated by members of this working group throughout the year. The steadfast commitment exhibited by many of you has facilitated the organization of various activities aimed at advancing the visibility of social studies on emotions and related subjects.
We are particularly pleased to announce the forthcoming joint session at the upcoming ESA Conference in Porto (August 2024), in collaboration with the ESA RN11. This session will delve into the intricate nexus between scientific and technical transformations and the realm of emotions, affects, and feelings. We firmly believe that this initiative is pivotal in further fortifying the connections among diverse groups dedicated to the study of emotions on a global scale.
Furthermore, we are elated to report the resounding success of our inaugural Feeling Meeting held last month at the University of Milan. The event witnessed remarkable attendance and engendered high-quality dialogues, marking a significant milestone as we prepare for the 2nd Feeling Meeting scheduled for April 30th in Mexico in a hybrid mode, and the 3rd Feeling Meeting on May 30th in an Online mode from the UK. Further details regarding both events can be found in the subsequent sections of this newsletter.
Another highlight is the upcoming Summer School "Emotions in Difficult Times: A Look from the Social Sciences" to be held at the International University of Andalusia, an event aimed to foster a space for dialogue and consensus, opening its doors to the active participation of young researchers and students in the field of emotions.
Lastly, we wish to underscore our ongoing preparations for the working group's participation in the upcoming ISA Forum in Rabat, Morocco, slated for July 2025. We anticipate providing additional updates on this endeavor in due course.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to each of you for your unwavering dedication and active involvement. With great anticipation, we eagerly anticipate continuing our collective efforts to amplify the visibility of our focal themes and reinforce the bonds within our network.
Wishing you all the best,
ISA WG08 Executive Board

Proposal for new book collection coordinated by member Dr Juan A. Roche Cárcel
|
Publications of the University of Alicante (January 2024)
The new collection of books on Sociology of the Arts aims to disseminate academic works related to the complex relationships between the arts and society from a sociological perspective, although it does not rule out other disciplinary approaches that analyze the links between the two.
Specifically, the collection will include monographic books, individual or collective, theoretical or empirical, micro or macrosocial, that are presented, selected by the director of the collection and that are positively evaluated, dedicated to the plastic arts, dance, music, photography, cinema, video art, architecture, urban art, graffiti, design, fashion and theater.
Furthermore, the books must make this arts-society approach through the analysis, isolated or interrelated, of any of the three dimensions - artistic agents, works and contexts - in which artistic practices are embedded. Thus, the authors of the books will be able to approach the links between art and society (1) by understanding the world of art within a specific socio-cultural context, that is, as a cultural field, as a system of economic production, of creation, reception, generation of meanings and symbols, or in other words, the collection will address production, distribution and social reception. Likewise, the approach to the arts (2) may take into account the individual and collective agents that intervene in the process of creation, distribution and exhibition, as well as their biographies and functions, conditioned by the socio-cultural context in which they carry out their work. Specifically, books related to creative agents (actors, actresses, directors, musicians, architects, visual artists, filmmakers, photographers, designers, dressmakers...), institutions, museums, critics, collectors, may be included the public… Finally (3), the collection will also incorporate publications that develop, through sociological or Social Sciences methodologies - “Iconological analysis”, “Social semiotics”, “Social rhetoric of the image”, “Mannheim documentary method”, “ historical-social genetic method”, and “Visual Frame” -, analysis of the contents of artistic works.
Consequently, the arts must be considered as documents, records or symbols of the social and, at the same time, as conditioned by society and/or as conditions of it.
General information:
-Languages in which a book can be presented to the collection: Spanish, Valencian and English
-Publications of the University of Alicante distributed throughout Spain, Latin America and some parts of North America.

16th ESA Conference – Porto 2024
|
Joint session: RN11 + ISA WG08
|
We are delighted to announce that next year's ESA Conference will count on a joint session between ESA RN11 and ISA WG08.
Coordinators:
Cécile Vermot, SupBiotech Paris – ICM
Adrian Scribano, Universityo of Buenos Aires, Argentina
Yvonne Albrecht, Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany
For this 16th ESA conference on the theme of "Tension, Trust and Transformation", we are proposing a joint session between ESA-RN11 "Sociology of Emotions" and the International Sociological Association's WorkingGroup 08 "Society and Emotions". This session focuses the specific connection of science and technical transformations and emotions, affects and feelings. Three perspectives will be addressed in this session. First, in contexts of science exists a kind of paradoxy (Amlinger/ Nachtwey 2022) on the one hand, scientific findings are framed as important and inform political decisions. On the other hand, this kind of knowledge is obliterated. we encourage papers which focus on this paradoxy and the role of emotions (trust, mistrust and enthusiasm) in it. Secondly, regarding social transformation, transmission of scientific knowledge in its various forms can also be examined in terms of power issues within its interrelation with emotion. Finally, the constitution of scientific controversies can also be examined in the light of the sociology of emotions. What emotions are involved in those debates which are often framed as neutral and objective? By whom and why? To what extent and in what way are they vectors of tension and transformation? The question of emotions and interdisciplinarity can be posed as that of the production of "situated knowledge" (Haraway 1988).

RN11 Sociology of Emotions

Coordinators:
Yvonne Albrecht, Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany
Nina Margies, Humboldt University of Berlin,Germany
Natàlia Cantó Milà, Universitat Obertade Catalunya, Spain
Cécile Vermot, Supbiotech Paris –ICM
Rotem Leshem, Tel Aviv University
With regard to the general topic of the conference “Tension, Trust and Transformation”, the Research Network 11 “Sociology of Emotions” brings into focus emotions, feelings, affects and atmospheres, that are entangled in and often driver of processes of transformation. In the context of climate change activism, global inequalities, persisting levels of populism and increased digitalization, what emotions are involved and how? What changes have been triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic? In what ways has "emotion work" been conducted on a collective level, where and why has it been absent? Is the current situation truly one of disruption and transformation –what are the emotional markers that suggest this scenario? How is trust possible under such circumstances? How can bonding and solidarity be created in a deeply segregated society? And on the other hand, how are anger, fear, sorrow, even hate parts of these transformation processes? All high-quality abstracts that focus primarily on emotions, affects, and feelings will be taken seriously.

RS13 - Emotions and Neoinstitutionalism
|
Coordinators:
Helena Flam, Universität Leipzig, Germany
Nina Margies, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany
Åsa Wettergren, University of Gothenburg, Sweden
The here proposed Research Stream turns to the Sociologists of Emotion and Neoinstitutionalists. The purpose is to launch a new approach to the research of emotions and institutions. In the Sociology of Emotions some work has already been done on schools, courts, prisons as well as on the state and the military. But this research has not been informed by Neoinstitutionalism and its derivative forms. Neoinstitutionalism has focused on the role of culture in the institution-building, and, in particular, on the diffusion of specific institutions within nation-states and across the globe. Its derivate -"institutional work" approach -has offered an interesting research agenda, but applied it mostly to corporations and work organizations rather than institutions. It focused on interests, beliefs and values, omitting emotions. Referring to these two approaches, one can say that Neoinstitutionalism managed to stay immune to the "emotional turn". Only "organizational institutionalism" explores the role of emotions, but research on work organizations and corporations predominates.
The proposed Stream is meant as an invitation to emotion-specialists to open up to Neoinstitutionalism and its new variants and to Neoinstitutionalists to explore the role of emotions in the institutions they study. Institutional, Historical and Political Sociologists might find both of interest. Abstracts working with Lawrence and Suddaby (2006), Jepperson and Meyer (2021), Lok, Creed, DeJordy, Voronow (2017) and Flam (parts of “Remembered and Retrieved” 2024) will be given priority. Two Sessions, each with four presentations, are envisaged.

Member Dr Juan Antonio Roche Cárcel along with other researchers have launched EMOCS, a research group on emotions, bodies and sensibilities at University of Alicante.
|
EMOCS aims to fill the gap in sociological knowledge regarding the study of emotions, bodies and sensibilities. By applying rigorous, empirical, and/or theoretical sociological approaches, it is expected to analyze and understand emotions and bodies from a social and cultural perspective. This approach will allow for a more comprehensive understanding of how social structures influence individual and collective experiences. Similarly, collaboration will not be limited to Spain. EMOCS research group will actively seek collaborations with other international research institutions (ESA, ISA, REDISS...), leveraging a broad network of prestigious and recognized international researchers. This will not only enrich the quality of research but also enhance the visibility of our institution in the global academic community.
Lines of action of the EMOCS Research Group:
It will become a center of excellence in the research of emotions, bodies, and sensitivities from a sociological perspective. Its research will be rigorous and evidence-based, contributing to the advancement of scientific knowledge in these areas.
Research results will have a significant impact on academia, providing a solid foundation for policy development and decision-making in key areas such as mental health, education, collective action, and social inclusion. These findings will also be translated into high-quality academic publications that will increase the visibility of our institution in the academic community.
It will not only be dedicated to research but will also develop dissemination activities (congresses, seminars, conferences...) and promote the training of novice researchers in the field of sociology. It will provide learning and development opportunities for young researchers and graduate students interested in these areas of study. This investment in research talent development will increase the institution's research capacity in the long term and ensure the continuity of research in emotions, bodies, and sensitivities.
It will address critical social issues affecting our society. For example, issues related to mental health, discrimination, gender violence, social movements, and identity construction will be investigated. By providing evidence-based solutions to these problems, the group will have a direct impact on society, improving people's quality of life and promoting a fairer and more inclusive society.
